Dominique, I have put a small fortran file into 
/pub/profile_data.transfer/usplit.f
to be included in the software directory.  It prompts for
a 1D or 2D data base file name, for example, tftr_73268_2d.dat
and then creates appropriately named ufiles, in this case
tftr2d73268.CURNBI
tftr2d73268.NE
tftr2d73268.NFAST
tftr2d73268.QNBIE
tftr2d73268.QNBII
tftr2d73268.QRAD
tftr2d73268.RMAJOR
tftr2d73268.RMINOR
tftr2d73268.SNBIE
tftr2d73268.SNBII
tftr2d73268.SURF
tftr2d73268.TE
tftr2d73268.TI
tftr2d73268.VOLUME
  I have tested it on a unix system.  It should also work under vms.
